A biogas latrin is a larger project and only useful if there is enough organic “waste”. Biogas toilets are particularly suitable for schools or other institutions working with many people.
If you want to cook with the produced biogas on a daily base, it is often not sufficient to fill the biogas plant only with human feces. In this case, it is advisable to add cow or pig manure or other biological waste in addition, so that the required gas production can be achieved.
Biogas plants can be constructed as a “fixed dome plant”, “floating drum plant” or as a “plastic covered ditch”. However, the most common variant is the “fixed dome plant”.
However, the principle is the same. The storage of organic material produces biogas in the absence of oxygen. The gas is a mixture of mainly methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and siloxanes.
It is often used for cooking with gas stoves or for lighting gas lamps.
The remaining residual product is excellent as a fertilizer and can be used very well for agriculture projects.
