It is recommended to use a sharp (warm) spatula to split the tire from the inside into its individual layers. This requires a lot of skill. In some countries, people are specialized in this and also deliver in bulk. The price of a finished car tire shingle should be well below 30 euro cents.
The inner carcass is very flexible and easier to handle than the tread. However, shingles can be recovered from both layers.
On top of the roof formwork a sarking membrane needs to be attached, on which the car tire shingles are nailed.
